Why Guatemala?
-
Guatemala captivates travelers with breathtaking landscapes, stunning nature, and active volcanoes that thrill adventurers. Where else can you climb a volcano? From our experience, a hike up Acatenango Volcano will be the highlight of your Guatemala trip—an unforgettable adventure with memories you'll cherish every time you look at the photos. You can sign up for a group hike to the volcano from Antigua, with local tour providers offering all necessary gear. During your volunteer project in Antigua, you can take this two-day hike over a weekend. The trek begins with a climb to the base camp, where you'll spend the night in a tent. Before dawn, you'll hike to the summit to witness an incredible sunrise at nearly 4,000 meters, with perfect views of the erupting Fuego Volcano. Even without the hike, just seeing Guatemala’s majestic volcanic landscape is worth the trip.

In Guatemala, you can explore the fascinating Maya culture, still alive in many local traditions. The rich cultural history of this indigenous group is evident in daily life, with many women wearing traditional clothing that symbolizes their identity and showcases impressive craftsmanship. Maya art is reflected not only in colorful textiles but also in street art adorned with traditional motifs. These artworks tell ancient stories and add a touch of living history to the streets. Handcrafted textiles, painted wooden masks, and other artisanal items hold great cultural significance and can be admired and purchased at local markets. In Guatemala, tradition and culture remain vibrant, offering a glimpse into another world.

Guatemala is a hidden gem in Latin America, less touristy than places like Costa Rica or Peru. Despite its off-the-beaten-path status, the country offers great infrastructure, exciting volunteer projects, and plenty of must-see spots. It’s not overcrowded, yet you'll find charming hostels, good restaurants, and cozy cafés at affordable prices. Compared to more touristy Latin American countries, Guatemala remains budget-friendly for food, transport, and activities. With convenient shuttles, you can easily explore diverse attractions—from cities and beaches to volcanoes and jungles. Plus, it’s an ideal place to learn Spanish, thanks to the clear and easy-to-understand accent.

Our favorite city is a stunning colonial gem, ideal for longer stays. With its charming cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and historical ruins, it transports travelers to a bygone era. The city offers diverse activities, from exploring its rich history and browsing vibrant markets to outdoor adventures like hiking and volcano climbing. Every corner reveals a new café or restaurant with rooftop views of the volcanoes. Known for its culinary variety, Antigua comes alive each evening with restaurants and bars offering delicious local cuisine and lively nightlife. It’s a vibrant mix of locals and backpackers and serves as a perfect base for exploring the country.
trusted volunteer opportunity
Guatemala is a developing country with significant social inequality and limited protection against climate change and species extinction. Many small NGOs and initiatives have emerged to address these issues without government support. Our projects rely on donations and volunteers to continue their vital work.
Social programs for children and women benefit from volunteer involvement, providing access to recreational and academic activities they wouldn't otherwise have. As a volunteer, you contribute to social equality and a better society.
Since we run our own projects in Guatemala we can ensure that your efforts make a real impact. Our team helps you find the right volunteer opportunity that aligns with your skills and interests, while also fostering your personal growth. With our extensive experience and local knowledge, we are here to assist you before and during your journey, ensuring a rewarding overseas experience.
Our Project Locations
in Guatemala
Jocotenango:
Located just a short drive from Antigua, Jocotenango is a charming town with a strong sense of community. It's here that our day care center is based, offering crucial support to local children.
Volunteers who choose to stay in Jocotenango will be accommodated at the day care center, allowing for a close-knit experience with the children and their families. This setting provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local way of life and build strong connections with the community.
Antigua:
Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and stunning views of nearby volcanoes. This picturesque city is lively and full of history, with colorful buildings, bustling markets, and a rich cultural scene.
Our guesthouse is located in Antigua, providing volunteers with a comfortable base where they can unwind after a day of work. The guesthouse fosters a social environment, making it easy to connect with fellow volunteers. Antigua’s central location also makes it a perfect starting point for exploring the surrounding areas.
Santa Barbara, Suchitepéquez:
Suchitepéquez is a rural region of Guatemala known for its agricultural landscape and traditional villages. This area is more off the beaten path, giving volunteers a genuine experience of Guatemalan rural life.
In Santa Barbara, our work involves visiting the families we support, providing them with school supplies, addressing basic needs, and assisting with home improvements. This region offers volunteers the chance to directly engage with local communities and witness the impact of their efforts in a setting far removed from the more tourist-heavy areas of the country.
Accommodation
You have the option to stay directly at the child care center with other volunteers or in a guesthouse in Antigua. Staying at the child care center allows you to live with other volunteers from the same project and experience the local culture more deeply, as you'll be immersed in the daily life of the center. Two meals a day are included while you work, providing a chance to engage fully with the community.
In the guesthouse, you'll share your new home with people from around the world in a dormitory setting. The guesthouse is located on the peaceful outskirts of Antigua. While private rooms are available for an extra fee, meals are not included. Volunteers often cook together in the communal kitchen, creating a vibrant and social atmosphere.
Both the child care center and the guesthouse offer rooftop terraces where you can relax and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding volcanoes.
We can arrange for our driver to pick you up from Guatemala City Airport and take you directly to your accommodation. The projects in and around Antigua are easily accessible by public transport, making your travel convenient.
